Meaning & context

What does Satyanarayana Aarti mean?

Unlike most aartis, this one is a summary of a story. The Satyanarayana Katha is read aloud during the puja — the poor brahmin, the woodcutter, King Chandrachud, the merchant Sadhu who forgot his vow, the cowherd boys — and the aarti then runs back through those episodes in order, so that the singing is a recollection of what has just been heard. That is why it belongs at the close of the ritual rather than anywhere in it, and why its verses can feel abrupt if read without the katha behind them.
