क्षेत्र और संप्रदाय के अनुसार विधियाँ भिन्न हैं। कुछ पूर्ण उपवास करते हैं, अनेक फल या सरल अन्न-रहित भोजन लेते हैं, और अन्य स्वास्थ्य व कर्तव्य के अनुरूप संयम रखते हैं।
केंद्र में विष्णु-स्मरण है, कठोरता की प्रतियोगिता नहीं। बच्चे, वृद्ध, गर्भवती और किसी रोग से ग्रस्त व्यक्ति सुरक्षित चिकित्सकीय सलाह मानें।
